We established the Conflict, Crises and Global Challenge (CRUNCH) Hub to provide a strategic perspective on the complex and interlocking challenges involved in responding to conflict, humanitarian and other global crises. We are committed to the humanitarian reform agenda, centring localisation, safeguarding and ethics in our approach, and ensuring that anti-racism, equity, gender equality and social inclusion are meaningfully embedded in our work.
Our areas of expertise include post-conflict reconstruction, peace-building, population displacement, irregular migration, modern slavery and illicit markets. We have delivered reviews and evaluations in these areas for the Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI), including a comprehensive review of 20 years of UK support for Afghanistan and an ongoing review of UK aid to Ukraine.
We have a strong interest in strengthening multilateral cooperation, and have undertaken organisational assessments for the Multilateral Organisations Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN) of several multilateral agencies working in this space (including UNOCHA, UNHCR, IOM, WHO and WFP). In 2022, we prepared an analysis for MOPAN of the challenges facing multilateral organisations in implementing the international humanitarian reform agenda. We supported the African Development Bank with a study on strengthening economic governance in fragile contexts, and with the preparation of its Fragility and Resilience Strategy 2022-2026.
Our approach has a strong emphasis on political economy analysis (PEA) and understanding complex institutional dynamics, allowing us to building a nuanced understanding of our clients’ needs and priorities.
Our CRUNCH Hub is led by Dr Marcus Cox who has more than 20 years’ experience with promoting new forms of international cooperation on knotty global challenges.
