Multilateralism in turbulent times

The Elders

Research Study

Client:
The Elders
Year:
2023

Agulhas has been supporting The Elders with research and analysis on the health of the multilateral system. The Elders is an independent group of global leaders, founded in 2007 by Nelson Mandela, which works to promote global cooperation on critical challenges facing humanity, including climate change, pandemics, nuclear weapons and conflict. In 2023, Agulhas supported The Elders with a study on “multilateralism in turbulent times”, exploring how changes in the global landscape are generating new challenges and opportunities for global cooperation. The paper looked at innovations in multilateral cooperation on climate change, and potential lessons for other areas, such as cooperation on pandemics.

In 2024, Agulhas supported The Elders with a second research paper on reform of the international peace and security architecture. The paper surveyed current debates on reform and explored some of the most compelling proposals, including for changes to the UN Security Council and its ways of working, strengthening the peace and security functions of the General Assembly, reforming the UN peacebuilding architecture, accountability mechanisms and links to regional bodies.
