The UK’s humanitarian support to Syria

Client:
Independent Commission for Aid Impact
Year:
2018

In response to the devastating crisis in Syria, the UK mounted its largest-ever humanitarian operation and has had to overcome substantial operational challenges to the delivery of aid.

This performance review assesses the effectiveness of UK humanitarian aid in Syria since the beginning of the crisis response in 2012.

The review gave DFID’s approach to humanitarian support to Syria a green-amber. It found that DFID has overcome substantial barriers to the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Syria and is providing life-saving support to communities in need. However, DFID took too long to put the required staffing and management resources in place, and its approach to learning has not been systematic.

Areas of expertise:

  • Aid effectiveness
  • Performance management and accountability
  • Conflict and fragility
